Increased Student Achievement

Numerous studies show that effective professional development is key in changing classroom practices. Districts/schools that ultimately get the results they want provide their teachers with initial training and ongoing support. Whether you handle this training in-house, bring us in to train your trainers, ask us to handle all your training needs, or create some combination of the above will depend on the level of preparation and the resources already existing within your staff development program. Whatever your needs, we can help!

Sheri Henderson is available for staff development in-service seminars and for other public appearances. Sheri’s seminars are research-based, interactive, hands-on, and move at warp speed (unless you request otherwise ….) She emphasizes practicality, giving teachers ideas and methods they can immediately put to use. She does not offer “canned” training days but instead designs each experience individually. Call her at 866.335.2643 (866-DELANGE) to discuss your situation. Sheri’s fees are typically $1,500. per day, $750. per half-day, $500. minimum plus actual travel costs from Orange County, CA and cost of participant materials.

Frequently-Requested Seminars Include:

Using STAR Assessment to Power What We Do

If you are concerned about API scores, then this one hour seminar is a must. Sheri offers a fresh, eye-opening, mind-changing look at today’s testing, then shows language arts teachers how to seamlessly integrate testing feedback, challenges, and realities with quality literature and writing-based instruction.

“I am a thirty-three year English teacher. I will be retiring in June, just three months from now. Based on what I heard in one hour today, I am going to change my teaching. I have no higher compliment to pay you. Thank you.” *

“Awesome! Sheri blew me away!” *

Scoring of Actual STAR Essays

Remember CAP scoring? Remember how valuable those sessions were for getting everyone on the same page, looking for the same traits when scoring? This one-day workshop updates and recreates that experience, using anchor sets and training sets provided by ETS. These are actual training materials that STAR scorers have received. Available sets: Grade 4 Narrative, Grade 7 Response to Literature.

“I am a first year teacher of 4th grade and this workshop has helped me immensely. I now know what my kids need to know to get ready for the 4th grade writing test.” *

Resources for Teaching the New Standards in Writing: Program Overview

(One to sixteen hours depending on your available time)
Introduction to the testing realities, research, philosophical basis, methods, and materials that power the De Lange / Henderson Resources for Teaching the New Standards in Writing program. If we have more than two hours, this seminar will include one entire writing unit, usually Response to Literature. Since the writing program methods scaffold from grade to grade, this presentation is suitable for a wide mix of grade levels. Typically, such a presentation is used to kick off a district adoption of the program, as a trainer-of-trainers session, or to create teacher interest in piloting for a possible adoption. Follow-up is strongly advised.

“Nothing but raves!”

Secondary Literacy Coordinator of Local District

“Very quick. I laughed the whole day and came away with a ton of new strategies. Thank you!” *

“I truly enjoyed today’s workshop but needed more time. There is so much to learn!”

Two-, Three- and Four-Day Writing Workshops

This option is most frequently requested by districts implementing adoptions of the writing program. We recommend beginning with two days that are either consecutive or at most one month apart, followed by one to two more days during the academic year. Content includes the writing program overview above (day one) and then continues with a single writing style discussed on each subsequent day. Since this day is domain-specific, a more narrow spread of grade levels is suggested: grades 3-5 or 6-8, for example. Participants receive a model lesson in addition to the materials found in the program. Requires purchase of one copy Resources for Teaching the New Standards in Writing per participant. Quantity discount will apply.

“Information was great! Thank you soooo much for buying each of us a writing binder. I’ll be using it TOMORROW!!!”*

“Thorough knowledge. Please come back for a more detailed discussion.”*

Follow-Up Writing Seminars (Two to Four hours)

Teachers who are implementing the methods and materials frequently request, require, and appreciate time to discuss their successes and challenges. These after-school two-hour seminars are designed to support teachers as they implement classroom change. Travel costs probably make this an expensive option for those of you in Northern or Central California, but districts in Southern California have found these seminars to be really useful.

“Amazing. Sheri answered questions I’ve been struggling with for my whole five year career. Thank you so much for bringing Sheri back for this discussion. I have just one question left: How do I buy stock in her?” *

Keeping It All Together*
*Or how to survive Standards and high-stakes testing, combine grade-appropriate literature with quality writing, and still keep a grip on your sanity.

This one-day seminar combines elements of the testing and writing seminars above with research-based discussion of issues in factual and literary reading. This session will use one STARLits title to focus on a single short story and address all aspects of standards-based preparation within the scope of that single work. This day is often requested in combination with the writing program overview day. Purchase of one STARLits binder for each participant is required; site licensing and discounts are available.

“ …outstanding seminar. I’ll use it immediately and it will change the way I teach. Great presenter, incredibly useful material.” *

Issues in Reading Instruction

This is a full or half day examination of research-based findings and their implications for reading instruction with regard to California’s current standards, testing, and anthologies. Participants will receive handouts outlining the research, connecting it to specific standards, and offering concrete, effective, and simple means of putting research into practice to improve tested reading skills. This session is useful for teachers from grade four through high school.

“Finally! A district-required in-service day that was actually USEFUL! That’s a first in my twenty year career.” *
